Apparently I was wrong. She did talk about writing to him and how thrilled she was to get an email in return. But I couldn't find anything on Sita Sings the Blues. I suppose Marilyn had left by then.

Maybe it was on her website.

Ebert did a post a week or two ago on blogs of his readers, and mentioned Marilyn's. He also mentioned one of a guy whose trying to go through all the Criterion collection, but looks to me likes he's falling behind. He had an interesting review of Black Narcissus, which is a beautiful film with some cultural attitudes that are worth discussing.

Forgot to mention that the Adam Clayton Powell doc was good as far as it went, but it only went for 52 minutes, and kind of rushed through his downfall.

There is some good footage of ACP, he was a charismatic preacher/politician who looked like a tall Cab Calloway (I think it said he was 6'4"). He was headstrong, as evidenced by his first marriage to a chorus girl, not the kind of thing a preacher usually did, and in direct defiance of his father who had founded the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. AC Powell Jr. told his father that he was marrying the girl, whether or not his father was going to kick him out of the church.

Anyway, the doc could have been longer, more rounded and fuller. Interesting and enjoyable, but more like a Tv biography than a feature film doc, imo.

Gromit, where did you find this? I'd like to see it.

Gotta run. I'll check back later tonight. And, thanks.

Here it is on IMDb ... though the mere 6 votes makes it seem hard to find.
This is the edition I have
Powell was a flamboyant, self-absorbed guy, and didn't adapt to the changing times well (he disliked Martin Luther King, for stealing his spotlight it seems).

Thanks Gromit. Seeing your copy, I was able to find on Netflix. And I'll be seeing it soon.

ANVIL, THE STORY OF ANVIL may be best documentary about rock and roll I've seen. Shit, it may be the greatest movie about being an artist I've ever seen.

I liked the Anvil doc but thought there was something missing. It didn't have a good editing rhythm to it, and needed more footage of their lives now outside of the band. It needed to get a bit more in-depth. Almost every part of it could have been extended.

I preferred the Metallica doc from a couple years back. It showed more of the artistic process and internal tensions. There the filmmakers seemed to have more and better access (there's even scenes where the band discusses limiting or cutting off the filmmakers access).

And unfortunately, Anvil's music wasn't that good. I thought Metallica had inane lyrics, but the band had a strong tight sound which powered right over the dopey lyrics. Anvil, otoh, had weak lyrics, iffy songs and a nothing-special lead vocalist. You can see why they didn't make it, which could have/should have been more poignant that the successful whiners of Metallica.

Anvil's European tour was something, though some of that footage seemed staged (though it probably wasn't). Helluva tour manager.

I've got Anvil in the house, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I've heard mixed reports, a la Marc v. gromit above. But I'm eager to see it. This Saturday we're hosting a Sita Sings the Blues dinner party. Food and a screening. Yay!

That actually sounds like a lot of fun.

What I call a party means we're having a couple and their preteen son over. She's a children's book artist and he's an Emmy-award-winning video director. I think--no, I know--they'll love Sita.

Yeah, but I rented the DVD from Netflix because we can see it better on the "big" screen.

Billy,

I also ordered Sita from Netflix. But, I posted that link for folks who don't have a Netflix account and can't get the the film at their video store. My local store, which has a huge selection of DVDS, did not have Sita.
