Oh, and I'm thinking about getting my friends who are expecting a framed Polish poster of a movie and some DVDs to back it up:
The poster here is Water Babies, but I haven't decided which movie yet... Maybe one day it'll be worth as much as the crazy US posters are.

Nick Cassacetes' The Notebook (2004) with Ryan Gosling is an old fashioned love story taken from youthful days to Alzheimer's disease and heart attacks. It is 123 minutes long. I have no idea why I had ordered it.

Joe--I completely agree with you about MacLaine as a dancer. She's Ruby Keeler redux--flatfooted, heavy-footed, and everything else a dancer should not be. How she started as a dancer is beyond me. But otherwise I love Shirley MacLaine, though to be fair I should probably resee Sweet Charity and reassess. My MacLaine-love may have blinded me a bit.
Certainly Gwen Verdon was far more accurate casting. Though MacLaine looks more like Giulietta Masina, Verdon is Masina if Masina could sing and dance. |

Gwen Verdon is just "impressive"! The few times I've seen her in film (did she make very many), she was the one I watched no matter who else was in the scene. She was a star in my book. |

She made very few films and even fewer as the star--in fact, only one (Damn Yankees). But she had a very important role in Cocoon. |

I thought she made few movies, but I had heard a lot about her Broadway roles. My saying she is a star in my book, is because she had that star quality of being the focus of attention when she is on.
We watched About Schmitt (sp?) last night. I'd seen it but Marta hadn't. Nicholson is one of her favourites. She likes him in anything. I liked it as much or more than when I first saw it. Marta liked it too.
Nicholson's performance was terrific. Did he get a nom for it? Most all the performances were perfect, and my home boy Len Cariou did a very fine job. |

Boy Verdon's film work was very small. The only two I'd remember would have been Damn Yankees and Cocoon. I know I've seen her so much more than that, so it must have been on TV. |

Gwen Verdon was a star in every sense of the word. She had immense talent, a special kind of sex appeal, and an innate likeability factor. She was one in a million. |

Was not remotely a fan of About Schmidt. Haven't really loved Nicholson since Easy Rider, so that didn't help. But I was very disappointed because Election and Sideways, both directed by Alexander Payne, are two of my favorite movies of the last ten or 20 years. About Schmidt was not (IMO) primetime Payne. |

GELSOMINA: "Me?"
"Yes you, who else?
You could run away, couldn't you?"
GELSOMINA "I tried."
"Nothing! ...
Can you sing, dance?"
GELSOMINA: "A bit."
"Maybe you like making love? ..."

Giuletta Masina also plays the Ginger role in Fellini's Ginger & Fred. |

It wasn't in a class of Election or Sideways, but it is a good movie. And when he finally gets to meet the zoo that is his soon-to-be son in law's family, it's hilarious and disturbing in equal parts. The expressions on Schmidt's face are priceless. |

I thought About Schmidt had three letters too many in its title. While watching it, I desperately wanted to re-write, re-edit and re-film nearly every scene. Some of that film was just painful. I'm convinced that I could have transformed and improved it into ... a mediocre film. |

LOL Gromit. And I agree. Extremely mediocre at best. |

Thanks to everyone who recommended Ballet Russes. I finally saw it last night and was mesmerized. What a superior documentary. |

Pretty much exactly my view. |
