Joe--You're right about Astaire and Steele, who was simply horrendous as Og. Steele was not untalented by any means, just wildly miscast. Don Francks and Petula Clark were just utterly colorless, and she was about as Irish as Sophia Loren.
You're also right about Kael and the auteur theory, though I always found her attitude slightly hypocritical.
Roger Ebert gave Finian's Rainbow four stars. That was an off day. |

I wonder how much Coppola gives a shit about box office. There's practically no marketing support for Tetro, and, as you've seen, it's playing in very limited release. See it when and where you can. Coppola put such unbelievable care into every frame of this film that you can tell it's about love of the craft rather than an appeal to the masses. |

Marc - I don't know when you plan to return to Texas, but Tetro is playing at the River Oaks Theater here in Houston. I'm hoping to see it next weekend if it's still here then. It should be since it opened just this past weekend, but one-week runs are not unheard of.

...it's in Houston now and will be in Indianapolis soon. Perhaps (and this is definitely just a guess) the Landmark chain can't afford too many prints of the movie and will have to rotate one or two around the country at their various locations. Maybe it'll be in Austin later. |

District 9 is quite an achievement for a youngster like Neil Blomkemp. Perhaps Peter Jackson had a lot to to do with generating all that thriling action. The editor too deserves a lot of credit. I have also never seen a news footage kind of narration succeed so well. Setting the story in South Africa, with its history apartheid with strictly segregated reservations or shanty towns, imparts a powerful political message to the movie.
SPOILERS: The aliens seem to be projections of white man's mental image of blacks. They are lazy, don't like work, do not obey laws, are ugly and unclean and procreate profusely. They are dumb and can be expected to sign any document to sign away their rights, of which they don't have many. They can be shifted from place to place.
The middle level bureaucrat, Wikus, appointed to implement their relocation is a gem of a character and reminded me, in the firrst half of the film, of the band manager Murray in "Flight of the Conchords", before he grows into a tragic heroic figure. END SPOILERS.
An excellent movie.

Inglourious Basterds looks really good. Looks like a long day at the movies on Saturday.
I was looking at the EW fall movies and trailers, and The Lovely Bones looks like a strong Best Picture contender. |

| District 8 1/2 is in the works. In that one the support structure for the space ship is finished but the workers join a circus one by one and march off, leaving the space ship unbuilt. |
