I was just going to ask about Mo, myself.
Syd, I took my granddaughter and grandson to see Iron Giant. They were around 7 and 4 years old. I'd read a good review of it. They were not too excited about going. Maybe they didn't like the name. They loved it and so did I. We had also seen the animated Tarzan earlier and they liked that, but like Iron Giant much more.
I'm still waiting for a sequel. |

Wolf
Revisiting this movie recently was a pleasure. Mike Nichols directs and Jack Nicholson leads a stellar cast in an absorbing and sometimes scary exploration of what might actually happen to a guy if he got bitten by a wolf and started to, you know, grow fur and howl at the moon and all that.
The metaphor of the corporate world as ruthless "dog eat dog" jungle is hard to miss. And if Michelle Pfeiffer had been given ten or fifteen minutes more screen time, the movie might also have provided an intriguing look at the idea that some women are attracted to wildness in men; as it is, however, this notion is only suggested.
The movie's set design and cinematography are also stars. There are lots of great shots of Nicholson being photographed with bars between him and the camera, an early signal that this is someone dangerous, a creature who should be in a cage. Also, there is a bravura sequence in which Nicholson's character begins to realize his senses have become vastly more acute, and he revels in it.
I mentioned the great cast before. Look how far you have to go down the list of names...

...before running into an unfamiliar one. I especially enjoyed Richard Jenkins, in this movie long before The Visitor made him more well known, giving a drolly funny turn as a NYPD homicide detective who must investigate the case of someone having their throat torn out.
All in all, great fun. |

Turkey does not fare well in Atom Egoyan's Ararat.......well, actually Armenia does not fare well at the hands of the Turks. And reading Middlesex......the Greeks don't fare well either. |

My kids loved Iron Giant too. They left room for a sequel, of course, but what kind of follow-up could they spin since so much of the first story was built around that first shock of discovery.
Now, if you wanna' talk animated sequels, the mother of all animated films is releasing its third installment. Toy Story 3 comes out in 2010, and I'll be there shoving every kid out of the way, including my own. |

Though I certainly enjoyed Toy Story, it was not a favorite of mine. Toy Story 2 was considerably better IMO, mainly for the inclusion of the heartbreaking and justifiably Oscarwinning song "When She Loved Me," which broke Randy Newman's string of Oscar-nominated bad songs/losing songs. |

Agree 100% about Toy Story 2. That was the film - and the song- that made a fan outta' me. |

Toy Story 2 was also a more interesting story, with some terrific new characters and it was funnier. |

Let's hope Toy Story 3 isn't another Godfather 3. |

Godfather 3 gets a bad rap for not being as good as the first two. It had a lot to live up to, and didn't do all that badly. Comparisons are always odious, but in this case impossibly so. |
