Odd thing about Rachel McAdams. She acts both as a blonde and as a brunette. When she's a blonde, she seems unexceptional. Amy Smart could do her parts. When Rachel's a brunette, she's one of the best actresses in Hollywood, and almost as beautiful as Gene Tierney.

Wade, I know I'm not revealing anything confidential from our recent phone exchange; but as you are unemployed, you can't get the meds that woud keep you stable. With the onset of my recent condition, I can't imagine going through the day without my three pills in the morning and five more at night. When I think of universal health care, anymore I think of you.

My camping emergency kit contains a single piece of paper and a pencil. If lost, I'll misspell a word and Billy will show up to correct it.

And hopefully bring a pizza.

And if Billy's busy, Gary will step in to offer corrections.
(I'm cool with it, Gary and Billy)

billy,

I know a thing or two about blackouts. Unfortunately, I can't remember what they are.

Nice quick witted reply.

Angels and Demons was a better movie than The DaVinci Code, not for the fact that the story line flowed better, but also for keeping Tom Hanks hair at a non-distracting length.

The story itself was actually very easy to follow for someone that had not read the book. Having read The DaVinci Code before seeing the movie didn't help as much as I thought it would have. A&D kept most things more in line with the action, the character development and the overall concept of the story. For me, it really helped that there were a good number of not-so-famous actors in this movie, further reducing any distractions throughout the just over 2 hour run time.

Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon was more polished this time around, even though the story takes place before The DaVinci Code. I think he was not only more comfortable with the story, the director and the whole production team. This was very evident to the viewing audience as the 10:10pm showing I went to was very intent on watching the film. People around me didn't fidget or get up multiple times to refill popcorn or soda. I tend to think that's a good indicator of a film keeping people's attention well. Either that or everyone was put to sleep. A quick look around proved that wasn't the case.

The underlying story about the Catholic church and their selection of a new pope was never overly negative nor was it soft in pointing out any corruption and deception in that process.

The movie was better than I expected (and I honestly could have thought of at least a few things I wanted to do than join my wife and her friend at the movies on a Saturday night). I guess you could say I'm glad I went.

Sailing in from the wilds of Computerae Distingrataia Employerus Shrinkaeum, just to say:

Hi, everybody.

After far too long an absence and far too shallow a perusal of recent posts, must heartily second the raves and plaudits for The Hurt Locker, which blew me out of the water and back again. It is currently tied with Up as my favorite film of the year thus far.

Love Third Man, always have, always will. It's on a home-taped VHS with Shadow of a Doubtand The Magnificent Ambersons that must be replaced by DVD editions sooner rather than later.

Elsewhere, the full trailer for Julie and Julia made my mouth water, and not just because of Mrs. Gummer's evident enjoyment at turning herself into The French Chef. Am very hopeful it will be a treat.

And what do the local gentry think about the 10-film Best Picture change by that other, um, film society? Me, I'd feel better about it if there was a slight expansion of writing and directing slots (given the slights and lazy choices that the television peeps enacted in their nominationals, don't get me started.)

Julie and Julia is on my must-see list. My fave Amy Adams as Julie with Meryl Streep as Julia Child? It sounds delightful. I may want to eat before seeing the movie.

Indeed. I may need an appetite suppressant; frankly, felt I needed to diet after seeing the trailer.

Marc, that's very kind, and will do my best. T'was a particularly trying spring-into-summer (not one but two complete hard-drive fry-outs), but am finally getting some equilibrium in post-ability.

I could never convince Nancy that Meryl Streep was a great actress. I think it's because Nancy saw Streep as a dramatic actress. I think she's much better in comedies and satires. I love her in Defending Your Life, Adaptation, Plenty, and The Devil Wears Prada. (I even like her in Out of Africa, which I don't think Nancy would have liked. Streep is excruciating as the naive Isak Denisen, but when she gets to tell her stories, she's trandescent.)She looks perfectly cast in Julie and Julia.

One thing for sure it will be better than it's semi-namesake, the dreadful piece of treacle, Julia, with possibly the worst S, Actress Oscar, ever.

inla -

Oscar time already?

No, seriously, always nice to read your poasts.

For those interested in all things Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow will be on The Colbert Report on Thursday.

inla!!!! Nice to see you In These Parts.

One of the ol' college roommates lived next door to Julia Child. The roommate was a flake, but I may have to see this (and yes, despite appearances this is actually related).
