Watch out for Ju Dou unless you're looking for a film where everyone is crushed by the juggernaut of fate. Sort of like a Chinese Oresteia.

Billy-- Based on your recommendation I put Knowing in my queue.

Btw, speaking of Woody Allen, I decided to see Murder in Manhattan again. It never pretends to be a great film but it is a lot of fun. And it certainly holds up.

Do you mean Manhattan Murder Mystery?

If you haven't seen them, I'd rec their 2nd - 4th films together: Ju Dou (1990), Raise the Red Lantern (1991) and The Story of Qiu Ju (1992). Their first film, Red Sorghum (1987), is also very good, somewhat raw and earthy.

I did see Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern and The Story of Qiu Ju, and enjoyd them. Probably I appreciated To Live more because of the pathos built around the children. I have not seen Red Sorghum.

I very much like the movies that Zhang Yimou and Gong Li put out together. I was lucky enough to know about them as their films were released, so I was able to see them on the big screen (each Raise the Red Lantern DVD release, for example, has had problems).

Raise the Red Lantern would be my favorite, partially because it was very much like the place where I worked at the time, except everyone was related.

I think Raise the Red Lantern is a great film. Kind of an improved re-working of Ju Dou.

Ghulam, if you liked the way Zhang dealt with the children, then you should try Not One Less, which centers around a remote village school and a young unprepared teacher.

Remember, I qualified my "entertaining and suspenseful" with "cheesy."

I've TiVo'd My Winnipeg. Got Near Dark coming in tomorrow from Netflix. High time I became a Kathryn Bigelow completist. My daughter tells me Strange Days is quite underrated.

Near Dark is great. Strange Days not so great. The Loveless is worth your time.

I agree with your daughter, although it may lack some punch after the turn of the millennium.
