Marc -- I quoted your first post on Public Enemies. And also read your second one. You're right. We're in complete agreement.
I think perhaps the only thing we may differ on is the love story. And trust me, I wasn't expecting such an intense one, so I very pleased. Of course you need fine actors to pull off what Depp and Cotillard did. In fact, I found the acting by each amazing.
Sometimes I think Depp doesn't get enough kudos because he often plays such 'other earthly' characters. But he is excellent in this. I expect his performance will go totally unnoticed.
Cortillard, on the other hand, had her accent to contend with. Still when we first see her, she jumps out of the screen. She is perfect as Billy Frechette. As one critic wrote, she doesn't seem to be able to overact. |

That critic was me, unless someone else said the same thing.
Marj--It's so funny. You called "Bonnie" "Bonny" and now you're calling "Billie" "Billy." You're having "ie" phobia today. |

Depp plays Dillinger as a cross between Clark Gable and Elvis Presley. Depp has the Presley drawl and Presley's lips, cheeks and eyes. I am certain that Depp was consciously channeling Presley as he was Keith Richards in PIRATES.
And when Dillinger grows the moustache, Depp does his Gable thing. |

OMG! Billy, perhaps it was you. I bet it was.
My "ie" day is only going to get worse if I keep trying to type too fast. I'm a slow typist. Always have been and probably always will be.
I guess I ought to go back to work. But I'd much prefer discussing Public Enemies. Btw, I also agree with Marc in that I don't expect a lot of people to like it. And not because of the action but more because of the lack of story arc.
Still my theater was packed. |

Marc -- you just reminded me of something. Did you notice that when Dillinger was caught he didn't have his moustache? And in the prior scene, I mean right before, he did? |

Francis Ford Coppola's TETRO has only grossed $250,000 at the box office after 5 weeks in theaters. Talk about a bomb. How the mighty have fallen.
Getting into the wine business was a good move for Francis. |

I saw Bruno. It was the same gag as Borat but a good gag. He's a brave guy, though I hope he doesn't get himself killed. The best moments for Cohen come when he makes people reveal truths about themselves.
I probably should have gone to The Hurt Locker instead. |

Also, man, America really really hates The Gay. |

Are you sure it's not just America really hates the Bruno? (I haven't seen the film, of course.) |

There are a few good laughs in Bruno, but most of it is either unfunny or revolting. If you think I am being prudish, go see it for yourself (This is not a recommendation).

I can't believe I'm saying this, because I like Sacha Baron Cohen, but I have no desire to see "Bruno". I feel like I've already seen it. I get the joke |

Well the box office fell off radically on Saturday after a strong Friday night opening, so word of mouth must be terrible. I didn't like Borat. The Bruno character is okay-funny without being really funny, but the real problem is you can't unring a bell. With Borat, and Ali G, I think Cohen has pretty much taken all the surprise out of the joke's set up, and with the surprise goes most of the fun. |

Well Marc, getting your post through first made my comment pointless. |

Joe,
we disagree on BORAT, which I thought was hysterically funny. |

True. I found it painfully unfunny. I did enjoy moments like exposure of the preacher (can't remember what he was supporting that he'd never want to be known for supporting) and the rodeo homophobe. |
