A must miss for me.
A partial cure for Weisz-o-phobia is her delightful performance in Definitely, Maybe, one of the most underrated movies of recent vintage and the one that should have made an A-list star out of Ryan Reynolds. (Instead it took Sandra Bullock, The Proposal, and the real-life marriage to Scarlett Johansson to do it.)
There is no known cure for Brody-phobia, certainly not his Oscarwinning exercise in monotony called The Pianist.
Ruffalo alone almost got me in the door for The Brothers Bloom, but then I read that his performance is supporting and that the movie was incredibly twee. I will certainly rent it on DVD. |

So did anyone besides Gromit & El Syd see Coraline?
I thought there was no response because it had already been discussed. But I searched and only found Syd's write-up and a few peeps muttering interest.
I thought/think it would be popular here. |

| I was one of those peeps muttering interest in Coraline. I just didn't get to it before it left the big screen here. It'll have to be a rental. |

Easy Virtue
How strange it was for me to see a story in which a sophisticated, intelligent American woman goes to Europe and is admired and sometimes envied by rich British women. In movies based on Henry James novels, for example, I'm used to seeing naive Americans travelling to the Continent and being devoured by the much more cosmopolitan Europeans. As we left the theater, I asked my London raised Mum why Noel Coward portrayed Larita (an American and the heoine of his play upon which this movie is based) as being more glamorous and world wise than her English counterparts. "Because he was being honest," she answered me without hesitating.
Anyway, Easy Virtue has an easygoing charm and an excellent cast. Those who saw Jessica Biel in The Illusionist will not be surprised that she is not at all out of her depth in these waters as the American beauty at the center of this romantic comedy. There are some wonderful Noel Coward one-liners which infuse the movie with great wit. And there is also a hilarious scene of "Did I see what I think I just saw?" flash of below-the-belt nudity.
Finally, it's hard to ignore the wildly anachronistic music soundtrack which include covers of songs as diverse as "You're the Top," "Car Wash" by Rose Royce (yes, the '70s disco hit) and "When the Going Gets Tough the Tough Get Going" by Billy Ocean, all done in a '20s jazzy style. Spend just 2 or 3 minutes there. Turn up your speakers and you can hear samples of most of the sountrack songs. It's fun. Just like the movie. |

I read "Coraline" and found it okay but not enthralling, so I didn't see the film. Then again, I haven't seen any film for months.
Interesting little article from Salon, about inflation adjustment for "box office record-breakers." Rhett and Scarlett still rule, apparently.

On the other hand, some of the older movies get their totals boosted, too, because they used to be (and sometimes still are) re-released. That's certainly true of Star Wars, Gone With the Wind and the older Disney animated features. I'm sure Titanic will do very well when it's re-released. Probably not enough to take on Gone With the Wind, but maybe enough to take on Star Wars. |

And I saw Coraline (not 3-D, though), and I thought it was fairly entertaining (there were also a number of interesting technical bits put into the film, but I never got to a second showing), and I even saw some thematic similarities to Let the Right One In.
But, although I went to a panel with Neil Gaiman a couple months later, he did not talk about it. |

I'm alive - the work project launched at the end of June, so I'm at least off the weekend work (although there will be a lot going on for several months to come). I've poked my head in once or twice, but it really has been *that* busy.
My film project is going really really well (well, except that we never have enough money), but I can't officially say anything until sometime in August or so.
I spent quite a bit of fondly-remembered time with Asteroids... I don't see that getting me into a theater, though. %^O |
