Sin Nombre is a powerful, violent film about two young people escaping from Mexican slums. Some elements are starting to look familiar as a genre unto itself, showing up in more and more films, only in different languages, with kids, gangs & poverty taking center stage. Nevertheless, there's something undeniably primal about watching a spark of hope flickering amidst hopelessness.
But you've gotta wonder. This tale of misery was shot in Mexico, the other current slum story, Gomorrah, was shot in Italy, while last year's Slumdog Millionaire was shot in India. After seeing all three I'm not sure if I should be mourning those desperate cultures, or lambasting those filmmakers for jumping on a hot, bankable export. |

Very cogent thought........I saw Sin Nombre and found it cringe inducing and passionate. I think there's a real need for well-off Americans to balance their good fortune with a little slumming. |

Inla.......Thanks for those reviews........I'll be seeing Up for sure:

| Up got a rave review from our only-sometimes-right local critic. The question is: do I bring kids and resign myself to the inevitable talking and shuffling of snacks? Or do I go with the wife and have a quiet, cinematic experience while wondering, "Would the kids like this?" |

Sin Nombre is much more similar to Gommorah than it is to Slumdog Millionaire. Both have the acidic tartness of desperation without the latter's Bollywood sweetener. Cringe-inducing? Well, yes, there were some really intense moments, but keep in mind my sensitivity's been stomped to dust after seeing Terminator and X-Men. |
