I still watch reruns of The Golden Girls every night and she is my favorite. I teared up when I heard the news. |

Today's "CBS Sunday Morning" had a great segment on Bea Arthur, featuring a 2002 interview and clips from her one-woman show. It made me wish I'd known more about her before. |

Kate Aurthur (there's a "u" in there) is the TV editor of the L.A. Times. |

That's right. You can read about him here.

And from an obit in my local paper:
Quote: Arthur was married briefly to playwright Robert Alan Aurthur, from whom she acquired part of her stage name.
It was a short-lived marriage and Bea Arthur never talked about it.
(got that from CNN:)
Quote: Along the way, she had a short-lived marriage she never spoke about, but she kept the last name -- Arthur. |

Jerry Stiller tells me he's very annoyed that the NYTimes obit failed to mention the important fact that Bea Arthur was a WAVE during World War II. He's right when he says show-biz obits tend to omit a lot of info that doesn't relate directly to the deceased's show-biz career. He says Bea's military service is an intrinsic part of her life story and that the Times was off base to leave it out. |

I agree. Neither my paper's obit nor the CNN write-up mentions anything but show-biz stuff. That's pretty sad - and I'd love to know more about Bea Arthur than what we already do!
(gotta say, billy, every time you mention your conversations with Jerry or Anne, I feel like asking you to tell 'em I said hi...*grins*) |
