The future Mrs. Marantz is my inspiration - to look that gorgeous at 59 (and that HAPPY!) is a feat, and I applaud her for whatever it is she is doing right! |

Unfortunately, I agree with Marc about Duplicity. It's a big disappointment. There are some clever moments, but overall the charm is lacking and the stars, though they are skilled, are not allowed to sparkle. Roberts is not looking "old," just older, and that's not bad, but the role is overly somber and she seems a little unhappy in it. Owen is okay but, as Marc said, not given enough to work with. The movie is going, sooner or later, to tank for real. Audiences will not approve.
Dolores thinks Julia looks not just unhappy, but depressed. She also--sorry if this sounds chauvinist--needs to lose a little weight. |

Not having seen the movie yet, I cannot comment, but I'll call you on your weight remark re Julia, billy - does she look sloppy, or is she just not her pre-babies, Pretty-Womanesque self? Because from what I've seen, this is not someone who is overweight - and I'm frankly surprised you made mention of it, billy... |

A TV interviewer recently asked Julia Roberts about her "parts" being "out there" (his words, not mine) even more than they were in Erin Brokovich. Her answer was that she was a nursing mom during filming of Duplicity. Maybe she still had a few pregnancy pounds at the time also? |

Well, the most recent of her 3 kids was born not 2 years ago - she looks damn good for a mother of 3. I just find it a shallow remark to make about an actress in regards to a movie; if she didn't perform to standard, that's one thing, but a weight remark is just catty. |

Roberts looked terrific on the Letterman show last week. |

I agree with you. Why would anyone make a comment like that?
In my defense, I did say it might seem chauvinist. I just think Roberts has always looked supremely fit, and she does look very good for someone who's given birth three times (well, twice, but three children). But I also said I think she doesn't look "old." Doesn't that count for something? Sorry, Lissa. |

By old I meant Julia looked tired and lacked her typical vivaciousness.
As far as her weight goes, she seemed out of shape and that probably goes along with having just had a baby. I know Julia's pilates coach very well, a tiny diesel dyke, and Julia is always training with her. Being pregnant and having a baby put a stop to that for awhile. So, in billy's defense, Julia did seem kind of flaccid and less trim than usual in DUPLICITY.
I can't even believe I'm talking about this. I need to get laid. |

I'm sure if Clive Owens had a beer gut and a double chin in the movie, the broads here in the forum would make mention of it.
I don't give a shit about what goes on in an actor's personal life. If she/he is supposed to be sexy and glamorous on screen, that's what I want to see. That's what Julia gets paid the big bucks for. There's a scene in DUPLICITY where Julia's body is shot in profile and her belly is distended. It was distracting. I figured it was because she was either pregnant or recently had been. The character in the movie isn't a breeder, so I was taken out of the movie for a moment and found myself thinking about Julia the person. Not good. Who wants to see Cary Grant with skid marks on his shorts? |

There is one highlight in DUPLICITY that gives the movie a brief bit of heat:
Carrie Preston as a travel agent who gets screwed, in more ways than one, by Clive Owens. It's a brilliant piece of acting that , for a moment, elevates the film into something worthwhile. |

"Duplicity" was shot almost 2 years ago. Roberts' baby was born in 2007. That long time lag was the one thing that made me suspicious about the movie. Usually they wouldn't keep a vehicle with Roberts and Owens in the can that long unless it needed some work. |

You're right about Carrie Preston; she was there in a way Roberts and Owen weren't. I also quite liked Kathleen Chalfant as the older woman who worked with Denis O'Hare (Duke) doing whatever it was they did. (I never got it completely straight, another of the problems with the movie.) O'Hare was also pretty good, as were some of the other character actors (including Paul Giamatti but pointedly not including the underused and sleepwalking Tom Wilkinson). |

Thanks also for this. A movie star has a responsibility to look his/her best if that's part of the job description. Kathy Bates doesn't have to worry about her body, but Julia Roberts does. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
Clive Owen, btw, looks smashing throughout the movie. Doesn't really help the overall package, but at least he's the eye candy he's supposed to be. |

See, I don't think Owen's appeal is about being eye candy. Not that I'm suggesting a double standard—I agree with you and Marc completely, and your point about Kathy Bates is apt—but while I think he's a good looking man, I really put him in the Bogart/Brando/Belmondo (what's with the B's?) tough guy too-cool-for-glamour school. He's the self-reliant stoic I want to be, not the hot dude I want to lay. If he could ditch the accent, I think he'd make a great Philip Marlowe.
Having said that, I've absolutely zero interest in Duplicity. |
