Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl leapt 135 places in the British charts to number four, even though it is only currently available on download. Undoubtedly, go to number next week and probably remain there for the rest of the summer. Rocky, raucous and infectious, it is reminiscent of Pink at her best. It’s largely unremarked acceptance into the mainstream is also indicative of a changed world. However, the song is too one dimensional to avoid the fate of all such novelty records: it is only a matter of time before they become an annoyance. A more considered view of the lyrics also show them to be less transgressive than the promised by bold chorus,

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick

Kudos for getting Cherry Chapstick to work in song, but less impressive is the subsequent qualification and calculation:

I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it

And lispstick lesbian cocktease,

Us girls we are so magical
Soft skin, red lips, so kissable
Hard to resist so touchable
Too good to deny it
Ain't no big deal, it's innocent

The video is an even bigger disappointment. Typical of the literalness in American videos, it is less thrilling and just as tawdry as a Victoria’s Secret catwalk show filmed on a mobile phone. And the ending is such a cop out, I could’ve kicked Katy in the cunt. I can’t wait for it to subside into pop history, only to be dragged out on its first, fifth and tenth anniversaries when it resurfaces on radio station play lists.
