I've always considered Christian Bale to be a very good actor.
That said, I just looked at a list of his movies that I've seen, and I'm not sure why I think that anymore... %^< |

I haven't seen 3:10 to Yuma, and it's been awhile since I've seen any Christian Bale (oh! the humanity). I just can't remember anymore. It's like my head is full of a lot of Japanese stuff I've seen in the past few months and there is no room for anything much older (and the Korean stuff will be back in about a month's time, which won't help w/CB).
So maybe it's time to check out Batman, then. I was going to do it at some point anyway. |

I remember being really impressed with The Machinist, and impressed but a little freaked by American Psycho (well, I read the book first, and that goes much much farther), but I can't really say *what* it was I found so good anymore.
Which may be senility... |

I should amend my comment about Bale in Henry V: now that I reflect, his voice sounded odd but it may just have been changing at that point. |

Lady: Surely you saw "Empire of the Sun." Of course Bale was a kid then, but he was excellent. |

Nope, I didn't, unfortunately. I've actually seen a lot less than I thought I had.
I used to think I was doing pretty well with keeping up, too... |

I was disappointed in The Dark Knight. I have to go back and read the posts here........Heath Ledger was the star.......seemed like he pulled a Johnny Depp. Aaron Eckhardt was more fascinating than Christian Bale. And the Batman didn't seem to have much power to do anything.... |

Bale is The Dark Knight's weakest aspect. He's neither good nor bad, really. Just uninvolving. This is less a problem in this film due to his co-stars, especially Ledger, who lives up to the hype and then some, but it came close to sinking Batman Begins. That and Nolan's mediocrity when it comes to action scenes are the flaws to an otherwise perfect film. IMO. |

Dark Knight turned on the same visual trick that the Johnny To film Breaking News turned on. There was a level of shooting into the light and background noise that kept the viewer looking past the performances and focused on the production design. |

Lorne beat me to the draw with his list of Bale's best cinematic performances. He is an intense and skilled actor perhaps as good as anyone since Sean Penn, say, at immersing himself in a character. My only criticism is that sometimes he can come across as a slightly bland, seemingly not always able to bring a character to life. He reminds me a little of Daniel Day Lewis but without, as yet, the same charisma or perhaps lacking the confidence or expereince, to inject that touch of Lewisian theatricality into the performance. |
