Ghulam - A not so perfect example of spin, wouldn't you say?

Yes Marj. A shrewd move on the part of an ultra-professional campaign.

By the by, I was talking to a friend who works at the veteran's organization I narrate for. He said that after yesterday, Bob Dole has lost all credibilty with these vets!

I pretty much expected that to happen. Bob pretty much proved to everyone that he lacks any credibility and was grandstanding for the wrong reasons.

Hell, I had more respect for him when he did the Viagra commercials. Even if he went back to hocking The Blue Pill, credibility is pretty much gone.

Chills,

Ya gotta know. For these guys, he was a hero!

It's one thing any of us to smart at his remark, but for vets? That's really saying something!

Yeah, it's amazing how these guys play the press. Bush and his people are very careful not to condemn the Swift Boat ad, and yet seem to be condemning a perfectly legitimate form of political speech. It isn't about citizens getting together, pooling money and putting out ads, like Move On does. This is about this particular ad being a stunning lie.

BTW, the Daily Show made my exact point last night about the Swift Boat ads and reporters:

Jon Stewart: "So Rob, what are the facts?"

Rob Corrdry: "Facts? I'm a reporter, John. I just repeat what both sides tell me. It's called objectiviity."

It will replay on Comedy Central tonight at 7pm.

Whitney:

Kudos... major kudos to you. Congrats. It's not an easy thing, but it can be done. It was a year on May 16th since I quit and I've not had one cig since... i still have the occassional cigar (read: Swisher Sweet, Macanudo, Primetime), but it's that long term habit of having something in my hand to puff on when I drink. But since I quit, it's nice to not have to itch for smoke or to go freeze my ass off in the winter time for 10 mins.

It's been very good. So once again congrats from someone who's done it.

"Personally, I plan to move to Jen's family farm in the middle of Nowhere, Minnesota when the end comes."

al, sometimes you really crack me up. the vision of an ultra liberal computer geek melding with the local posse commitatas as winter marches across the barren plains in a post apocalyptic america is pure...well, "the postman"!!!

please don't take offense, but , honestly, seeing you chewing the fat with clyde and claude over the last blatz beer in america is priceless.

Transcript of the Daily Show:

STEWART: Here's what puzzles me most, Rob. John Kerry's record in Vietnam is pretty much right there in the official records of the US military, and haven't been disputed for 35 years?

CORDDRY: That's right, Jon, and that's certainly the spin you'll be hearing coming from the Kerry campaign over the next few days.

STEWART: Th-that's not a spin thing, that's a fact. That's established.

CORDDRY: Exactly, Jon, and that established, incontravertible fact is one side of the story.

STEWART: But that should be -- isn't that the end of the story? I mean, you've seen the records, haven't you? What's your opinion?

CORDDRY: I'm sorry, my *opinion*? No, I don't have 'o-pin-i-ons'. I'm a reporter, Jon, and my job is to spend half the time repeating what one side says, and half the time repeating the other. Little thing called 'objectivity' -- might wanna look it up some day.

STEWART: Doesn't objectivity mean objectively weighing the evidence, and calling out what's credible and what isn't?

CORDDRY: Whoa-ho! Well, well, well -- sounds like someone wants the media to act as a filter! [high-pitched, effeminate] 'Ooh, this allegation is spurious! Upon investigation this claim lacks any basis in reality! Mmm, mmm, mmm.' Listen buddy: not my job to stand between the people talking to me and the people listening to me.

STEWART: So, basically, you're saying that this back-and-forth is never going to end.

CORDDRY: No, Jon -- in fact a new group has emerged, this one composed of former Bush colleages, challenging the president's activities during the Vietnam era. That group: Drunken Stateside Sons of Privilege for Plausible Deniability. They've apparently got some things to say about a certain Halloween party in '71 that involved trashcan punch and a sodomized piņata. Jon -- they just want to set the record straight. That's all they're out for.

STEWART: Well, thank you Rob, good luck out there. We'll be right back.

Once again the Daily Show is the only place doing any reasonable analysis.

while i'm here...

i was hoping that once we got past the split lobby issue, we might focus again on a specialty forum. so far genre seems to be the choice. so which specific genre, of those so far mentioned (or others) do you propose?

i have to be honest here, i'm getting really tired of constantly making proposals that go nowhere. since the more vocal of the group seem to be more involved in politics, perhaps we should wait until after the election in NOVEMBER to discuss FILM related topics on a film forum.

i don't see a whole lot of politics being discussed at MILKPLUS despite the fact that one of it's founding members considers this to be the issue of our time and expounds at length on it in THIS venue.

how about it? are we going to have a genre forum or not?

Yes, it's a little too late for Mr. Bush, but at least he finally broke down and did what should have been done a few weeks ago. Pandering for votes? Yeah, pretty much. Most of conservative America going to buy this one? Yep.. another fish in the barrel.

Quote:
President Bush on Monday said TV ads that question John Kerry's military service should be stopped, along with those run by other outside groups, but Democrats contended he didn't go far enough and said he should demand that the controversial commercials attacking Kerry be taken off the air.

Speaking to reporters at his Texas ranch following a meeting on the nation's defense priorities, Bush for the first time specifically addressed the commercials aired by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which has strong GOP fund-raising ties. The group's ads attack Kerry's service in Vietnam and his anti-war activities after returning home as a decorated veteran.

While Bush again said Kerry served ''admirably'' in the military and ''ought to be proud of his record,'' the president did not denounce the swift-boat ads for their content. Instead, he said those ads and other activities funded by so-called 527 groups, which have the ability to accept unlimited amounts of money to promote political agendas, should be stopped in the interests of campaign finance reform.

I don't see a Lobby over on MILKPLUS... could be why politics is not discussed over there.

As for a political forum, while I think that would be cool, this is a film forum and a polititcs forum doesn't really have a place here. As to why we have a Lobby where various subjects other than film are discussed? It's because we are a diverse group with many interests. A subject that I don't want to read on the Lobby comes up, I scroll past. Even if it's 20 posts long. Most of the time I read it anyway out of curious nature.
