I thought that was a very interesting and accomplished film. Topped my list for last year.
Just read your write-up. You need some gimmicky rating system. Sounds like you liked it though.
I didn't think the exact background was that necessary, especially as the film seeks to disorient.
But I'm sure it will help some to get into the film.
The other day Rod praised 4,3,2 -- and I meant to mention that he still has 3 more Romanian films to go from last year: Paper Will Be Blue, California Dreaming and 12:08 East of Bucharest. And that's my order, with 4,3,2 slotted in second.
I still haven't seen The Way I Spent the End of the World. |

Just got my copy of Saam gwok dzi gin lung se gap, or, as we would say, Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon from www.hkdvdstore.com. There's no release date in the States for this film, which just premiered in China on April 3.
I'm a little worried about our hero's origins: "He was a leader who had courage and wisdom and achieved independence of his county even though he was born as bumble beginnings." I guess Dad thought Mom was on the pill, or the condom broke.
I fear the subtitles after that.
Stars are Andy Lau, Maggie Q and Sammo Hung. |

Staying away from rating systems. I just can't seem to wrap my head around it.
I did like the film, but it was very confusing. Yes, you're right, it does seek to disorient, but I think it's easy to lose the finer points of Muntean's craftsmanship. I kept checking in and out of the film emotionally during the first half because I wondered who/what was going on. I don't feel it was a cheat to describe the revolution in my review, because surely the Romanian audience for this film would be very familiar with it and the incident on which the film is based. It also gave me a good excuse to read up on this event about which I know nothing except what I've seen at the movies.
Siskel Center is wrapping up a month of Romanian films from the past 40 years. I only went to see this one, but the guys at the film center weren't that impressed with the retro's films.
I'd put 4,3,2 ahead of this one and tie it with 12:08, whose humor I couldn't resist. |

Quote: Okay, I'm going out on a long, long limb here, but if I'm proved right I want some respect.
Pixar has a new animated feature opening tomorrow called WALL-E that I predict will win the Best Picture Oscar. I'm talking Best Picture, not "best animated feature." Not only is it getting the best reviews of the year by far, but it's apparently an unforgettable statement on various societal ills like ecological waste and morbid obesity.
Remember, you heard it here first...if I'm right.
Actually, I heard it first from my 4 year old grandson. He saw a brief clip at the beginning of the dvd Dan in Real Life........from then on all I heard was WALL-E, WALL-E, WALL-E. I plan to see it.......watching Pixar films with my grandchildren is my new avocation. |

What I meant you heard here first was the opinion that WALL-E would win the Best Picture Oscar. Unless a four-year-old is really into the Oscars. |

And I think this is an important point. It probably is a better film than a lot of films out there. But for those of us who appreciated the wonderful writing of the series, there are bound to be disappointments. |

If you judge it on clothes alone, you won't be disappointed. |

I actually strenuously disagree with you, mo. I thought the fashions were eyesores for the most part. The 80s fashions were horrible--I guess on purpose--but they were in there for camp value, something totally lost on me. |

billy --
I don't think they were supposed to be '80's fashions. They are contemporary fashions. Patricia Field is the designer. Her clothes really can't be categorized. They are just very over-the-top. She has her own website and store. I can't say I like much of the stuff she sells online.
The Louis Vuitton bag given to Jennifer Hudson for example is from the latest Vuitton collection. And no, I didn't like it. The rent-a-bag service that Jennifer Hudson talks about is a REAL service! I see their ads in a lot of magazines.
We see a lot of designer brand names in the film: Manolo Blahnik, Chanel, etc. Everything in the movie is so trendy that it will look dated in a few months. "Sex in the City" is this summer's "The Devil Wears Prada" for the heavy duty fashionista.
Just about all the clothes in the movie are outrageously expensive, so guaranteed to make female audiences in the know ooh and ahh.
I don't think the clothes would be of much interest to any guy not plugged into the latest in fashion. |

I tend to like things that look good. If it's the latest fashion or not couldn't interest me less. |
