Prejudging a film, a 3rd Eye trademark.

Really, it's tedious to keep hearing pronouncements about how perverse a certain film or genre is. Don't see it! That's your right. But why keep beating the horse you won't ride?

I have said before and I will say again now: I have no trouble accepting the idea that the movie is made skillfully, nor that Haneke is a talented professional. I do not have to see the film, however, to know that it's not anything to which I want to give my money or attention, and I'd like to make as many people on this forum aware of how toxic the work may be so that they may avoid it as well.

Marilyn unless all the reviewers I've read are delusional or have succumbed to some sort of mass hypnosis, I'll take them at their word, which is that the movie is sick with no redeeming qualities. I'm sorry if I can't meet your standards before commenting on the movie. I have seen the preview a number of times and on first viewing said to myself, "There's a movie I won't be seeing."

How many frigging times do you have to say it? You just keep rubbing in that this movie is vomitorious, sight unseen! That's not a review of the film, it's a condemnation and does not represent all reviewers of the film. It's like people prejudging The Passion of the Christ or The Last Temptation of Christ.

Speaking of Christ, there's still so much to learn about Easter for me...

Hee hee. Yeah, I've got Easter on the (half-eaten) brain--writing a review of the 1961 King of Kings.

Life's too short; life is all about choices; life is a box of chocloates...no scrub that last one. Whatever adage one chooses to make the point, the retired film fantaics or professional film critics amongst us aside, few of us can find the time to see even a fraction of what's out there. I find informed prejudgement including such inscisive tools as once bitten twice shy, to be invaluable.

Jeremy--I'm trying to find a way to use your entire post as a tag line. Obviously I know it can't be done. But it's a great post. Which doesn't take away from the other great posts on this thread. Jeremy sense of humor just grabs me.

Hmm. Maybe the first sentence? We'll see.

Oh, I don't know. I think Repo! The Genetic Opera sucks, and I haven't even seen a preview yet.

Lady W -

Thanks for the long post about "Lust, Caution." It sums up exactly what I was trying to say about the movie...but had forgotten by now. I didn't see that deluxe book - I think only a small paperback was out when I bought it.

I agree that there's a lot going on in LC, if you're open to looking for it. This is one movie that deserves to have a really good DVD edition!

Well, I certainly hope so! A musical starring Paris Hilton -- how can it possibly go right? I must admit, I'm waiting to see this one.

No problem, although I think I was getting a little too into it... there were several movies at the end of last year that I thought were really good, and I've spent a fair amount of time digesting them. Lust, Caution was one of them.

Gromit's given up on it, though. %^D

I went to Borders to find a copy of the short story, which I found (the small paperback) - but next to it was a hardcover book with more information, so I got that instead.

It's still at amazon, if you'd like to take a look.

Lady W,

I noticed that The Dragon Painter is going to be shown on TCM in June. I'm still hoping to see it. The local Hastings has it, but only for sale, not rent, alas.

I've marked it. I'll probably try to buy a used copy when I get home. The comments regarding the original language in the story are really interesting from the Chinese speakers at amazon.

I must admit to prejudging a film occasionally. When I saw the trailer for There's Something About Mary, I thought, "Now there's a movie I'd go around the block to avoid." No matter how many people gush about how good they think it is, I can't bring myself to see it.
