I'm pretty much in agreement with Rod's take on Blood Diamond, it had the making of a very good film, a Constant Gardner with guns, but it spurned its destiny in favour of being a mawkish crowd pleaser; which was a shame, because Leonardo De Caprio had the presence to carry a much darker film. Now if only Alfonso Cuaron had directed.

Just watched Two Days in Paris. I absolutely LOVED it. Its too bad I hadn't seen it prior to The Blanch Noms and awards. On my top ten for 2007, if not possibly my number #1. wonderful writing, acting (love Adam Goldberg), damn funny - I can't remember a film from last year (or the previous year, for that matter) that made me laugh so hard. I'm definitely buying this film. Julie Delpy, I think I love just about every film she's in, she's so smart, funny and interesting, reminds me of Diane Keaton (at her best), only with more passion, edge

Did you see Lust, Caution? Supposedly the same basic idea. I can't see how Black Book could top it. Maybe match it, but not top it.

And it's Verhoeven, so maybe not match it, either.

I saw this movie right in the middle of the Blanches. I missed a few of the noms. but I think I gave it Best Actress but missed Best Screenplay.

Julie Delpy is amazing in that she acted, wrote, directed, and did the music. Her use of the everyday quirkiness of the characters (her own parents, Goldberg - her own ex-boyfriend) was so creative. Did you watch the interview with her in the "extra."

Black Book was my number two film of last year. It's brilliant, IMO.

Black Book received a lot of praise here. I thought it was decent, but had the same reaction as the Yamguy: see Army of Shadows and compare.

I'm warily planning a minor Asian film binge, including Millennium Mambo and Lust, Caution,
plus Chungking Express and The Wayward Cloud
.

Matter of fact the home cinema is running behind schedule. That's what you get when you hire a cat to do the projecting.

Gromit, I haven't seen Army of Shadows yet, but the comparison with Black Book is specious. Black Book is intentionally a melodrama. I don't get the impression that Army of Shadows is. Subject matter may be similar, but approach way different.

And so one has a much greater impact than the other.

I disagree. Melodrama was the right way for Verhoeven to make his film. I seem to remember that a lot of people around here were deeply affected by Far From Heaven, a melodrama in the same way Black Book is.

No I didn't thanks for mentioning that - I haven't returned it yet - I'll check the "extra" out. But seriously - I want to own this film

Watched Talk To Me last night. Very effective performances, slightly sloppy filmmaking. Loved Cheweitel's Johnny Carson affectations.

Saw Sunshine the other night and while really beautiful to look at, Cillian Murphy especially, I'm not the biggest fan of humans stranded on spaceship flicks. @ least the score was nice, the effects thought-provoking and then there's always Michelle Yeoh!

Glad you loved it. I did, too.

BLACK BOOK is a thrilling adventure movie filled with non-stop action, Nazis and S&M. What more could you want? Verhoeven is a very sly fellow. He makes deliriously entertaining movies with subversive twists. I've liked every film he's made, including his big-budget homage to Russ Meyer: SHOWGIRLS.

I (final-fucking-ly) watched the two consecutive extended parts of Grindhouse last night.

It struck me that the two parts, whilst linked with characters and ideas, are essentially very different beasts.

Planet Terror is goofy, hilarious, and essentially a piece of well-done minor satire – in fact, it was a lot like Hot Fuzz, without the self-consciousness, in spirit and inspiration.

Death Proof, on the other hand, might be that best film of 2007. Impeccably stylish, brilliantly made, rich with character and a far more symphonic sense of genre’s possibilities.
