The Chinese New Year (ending tonight ... quick, get out your fireworks) really got in the way of the normally efficient bootleg manufacturing and distribution system.

Finally, tonight I was able to pick up good copies of:
Darjeeling Ltd.
Cassandra's Dream*
Michael Clayton
Into the Wild
Margot @ the Wedding
My Blueberry Nights
(Their Will be Daniel Day
&
The Ass of JJ
have been upgraded to fairly good quality, but still not dvd-quality, so I passed)

Also, bought The Big Combo, which I'd like to watch tonight if not for the need to Blanchify.

I had abstained from voting in many categories either due to not seeing enough of the films (I've seen 3 in most categories) or having no favorite.

I guess I'll start with Michael Clayton, and if that's not too long, try to get to Margot@ or The Wild. [It'll be like a last-minute caucus at gromit's. Let's just hope no one puts sugar on the popcorn]

* Has anyone seen Cassandra's Dream?
It actually appears to be a 2008 release in the UofSofA
USA -- 18 January 2008 limited,
while it opened in France and Spain in Oct. '07.

I will be interested to see how you like Michael Clayton, which I thought was a well done film, especially Tom Wilkinson's role.

I thought it was good but not great, though Wilkinson's performance was outstanding.

We're getting Persepolis at the local theatre! Be Kind Rewind as well, which looks pleasantly silly.

I love Persepolis. And Be Kind Rewind is Michel Gondry (and they filmed it in northern NJ), so I'm looking forward to that.

It was pretty popular at Sundance when it was here last month. Tickets went very quick.

I still find it hard to predict what will or won't make it to the local theaters. The real surprise was when Pan's Labyrinth didn't make it to the local multiplex, but played for a whole month at the dollar house last year.

Was that after the Oscars last year? I remember the dollar theaters showing that as well. It picked up popularity after it won a couple of the golden statues.

PERSEPOLIS is playing at the Taos' local multiplex starting tomorrow. Go figure.

Michael Clayton is a pretty well-polished and taut thriller. Which is important in order to make believable the multitude of sins committed by corrupt lawyers.

SPOILERS

Quote:
I found the lawyer shenanigans to be rather over-the-top, but well-integrated into the storyline. Lawyers don't really need to get into murder and such, because they are usually insulated from corporate wrong-doings, as they are primarily advisers not actors.

The crazy lawyer character was fun and interesting, but I'm not convinced that a huge $6 billion class-action lawsuit would be led by one unstable character on anti-depressant meds. I was amused at how young and clueless all of his assistants looked. I guess forgoing the medication was the explanation for the defense lawyer aiding the plaintiffs, but really a lawyer with a conscience would be more likely to leave the case (and then perhaps leak documents).

So what was the deal with the red and blue covers anyway? Just a red-and-blue herring?

UNSPOIL

Anyway, all of this didn't hamper my enjoyment, but I wasn't sure why this was all about corrupt lawyers and not the corrupt businessmen they represented.

Also, I thought the film spent a bit too much time on the gambling and bar debts that Clayton owed. And if he was working for a fairly major law firm on a long-term basis -- even not being a partner -- his salary would easily be in the mid-6 figures, and a $75K debt would only be one or two months salary. (starting salary for new graduates at big law firms is around $150K these days).

The U-North conglomeration never really came into focus for me. And I didn't really like the editing that went along with Tilda Swinton's character. Clooney's performance seemed a bit uneven, at some points coming across as acting.

I also didn't see the need for the opening scene and then a flashback to 4 days earlier. Anyone have insight on why they chose that structure?

I did like the kid's fantasy book and how that served as both a metaphor for the plaintiffs and the corporate law world. I also liked when the crazy lawyer chats with Clayton's son on the phone about the book. The ending was just okay, but I do like when things wrap up quickly. I dislike long overblown endings.

I think it was just before. It was getting a fair amount of buzz at the time.

Billy--It all depends on what Lorne decides re: the Best Actor category. As soon as I hear from him, either he or I will post on that forum.
