I actually have a copy of that... It's very well done, although the ending is ambiguous. I haven't seen any of the other animation films (I actually didn't know if was up for an Oscar when I first saw it), so I can't say much about the competition.

The Hepburn bio. I read recently talked about her innate sense of style. Apparently for "Roman Holiday," they just turned her loose in Europe to shop and ended up using a lot of her fashion choices in the film.
So much for the famed Edith Head who had the reputation of never refusing credit for the work of others. |

Mo, this would make a great signature line. Especially for you. And I think you'd be the only member quoting yourself! |

Thanks, but I don't want to permanently go on record as dissing Head. To do so would be kind of like saying there's no Santa Claus. I think a lot of her detractors are probably right, but many actresses adored her creations and wanted to keep them after shooting was over.
Costume people in the know revere designers like Dorothy Jeakins. Head is generally considered overrated by insiders but she was gifted at self-promotion (her appearances on Art Linkletter's "House Party") and was a real diplomat with difficult actresses.
She always wore the same hairstyle, glasses, suit and drove her little tan (I think) Mercedes 210 SL which was always parked outside her bungalow on the Universal Studios lot.
I heard that her fittings were very theatrical. She'd grab bolts of cloth, unroll them, and throw the fabric around while the fitter artfully draped it on the actress. |

I prefer Fedoras. I used to wear them too. Now those get attention and don't mess up your hair. |

No, no - that's not the hat she wears in the final scene... |

PERSEPOLIS is a wonderful animated film. Terrific looking in black and white.
Not sure why it didn't make it as a Foreign Film nom. I'm not sure it will beat RATATOUILLE. It's intellectual and geared to adults. I suspect that many more Acad. members will have seen RATATOUILLE and will be inclined to vote for it.
I will go back to see PERSEPOLIS a second time. Definitely worth seeing. |

I will go back to see PERSEPOLIS a second time. Definitely worth seeing. Didn't make it as a ForLang film nod because the committee that arranges such things in AcladamyLand are idiots, or they'd never have snubbed 4 Months. Also, because everyone assumed that it was a surefire AnimFeat nominee, and so it proved. I found it a marvelous film. It is highly unlikely to unseat Ratatouille, though.
And, in a burst of Blanchely industry that astounds even me, I finally saw Blood Be Will There today. Left me ambivalent and admiring at once. In fact, little that I can say or attempt would serve either its achievements or its liabilities, but Daniel Day-Lewisohn had better determine a fresh way to acknowledge his peers on Sunday, because he's going to win a second Bald Gold Man With A Sword. The fillum, on the other hand, hasn't a Third Universalist's prayer at Racso, barring extreme Springfield Stonecutter subversion with the ballots.
Meanwhile, the Funny Games trailer thoroughly unnerved me, and when it turned up again on the Michael Clayton screener tonight, I had to hide my eyeses. |

The Funny Games trailer was hissed and booed every time I saw it in a theater. The movie looks disgusting, even more so because Naomi Watts and Tim Roth are so effective in it. |
