Relayed Deaction Dept.:

Contrary, to Inlas comment, I felt The BAFTAs contained several surprises. Although Atonement came away with best film, it did less well than expected (not even picking up Best Score), Most of the other honours were shared around with the La Vie En Rose coming away with the biggest haul (4 awards) including a win for Marion Cotillard over home fav Julie Christie. And nobody expected Tilda Swinton to get best supporting actress.

Atonement won't repeat its win for best pic at the Oscars, so reading the tea leaves, I'd suggest that with its BAFTA for Best Direction and two other awards, it is NCfOM that is looking best placed for Hollywood glory.
Ah, but of course, let me rephrase -- the Baffetas offered few surprises por moi, and No Cormac for Frances McDormand is Mortally Locked and Loaded, in lieu of the improbable event of the Springfield Stonecutters unexpectedly re-rigging the newly resurrected telecast under cover of post-strike effluvium and general mayhem. Anything's Possible, but this feels like Done Deal for the Coens, for DD-L and Bardem, a Gigantor Upset(s), if any were unseated. In the bags. If there is a Gigantor Upset on Racso Night, it seems most tiltable amid the craft and technical awards and on the distaff side of the acting aisle. Christie could just conceivably be beaten, but it feels highly unlikely in Tinseltown at present. GRAMPAS has this not-so-great track record with foreign language performances, no matter how One For The Ages they are, and here it comes down to screening and screener attendance and with a strike on and the whole thing up for grabs until, like, yesterday, who in the bulk of the membership, all branches, I mean, can be counted on to have actually seen La Vie En Rose? I know, I know, like I said, not-so-great track record, and the past historic foreign language recipients were in great big box office hits of their days. The SAG edge to Christie over Cotillard would appear to be key. There could be a Brandon Teena over Caroline Burnham-esque dust-up on The Night -- since both turns have long been readily video available, though that in itself has little weight with these people this year -- save for the vote-count diluting, SAG-unrecognized factor of Juno Love, hence, Ellen Page is the Tipping-Point Wild Card in Category. In different ways, mirrors last year's Racso Actresso face-off-oh, only there it was Miranda Priestly who siphoned off the Barbara Covett vote, not Raimunda, let alone poor Sarah Pierce, last year's Wendy Savage, deep sigh -- and let preordained winner Elizabeth II take the final crown. And that's where Fiona stands against Edith and Juno, with Elizabeth I not really in the running, and Wendy, well, poor Wendy, sigh. If they do Supphose Actor first this year, it's instantly gonna be either Business As (Returned To In The Nick Of Time) Usual or Anything (Or At Least A Couple of Things) Can Happen Night. If they present Supphose Actress first this year, a Swinton Win would herald a possible flare of Clayton Tension, should a logjam split the ballot between Blanchett and Ryan, with Dee the SAG-Indicated Wild Card and Miss Ronan in neutral coming round the Outsidest of Chances to even the playing field and giving Tilda the bell curve. It's possible, but I'm feeling Ryan love today, Blanchett love tomorrow, and Ruby love through the night. And remember, only PriceWaterhouseCooper's hairdresser knows for sure.

Triple post, but who's counting? When you re-phrase something you mean business!

Re: Bacall's Oscar loss. I always thought it had something to do with her reputation as a "bee-yatch."

I don't know if Ruby Dee is a sweetheart or not, but if she is; it'll definitely help edge her toward an Oscar win.

Ach! It's always something. Newly deleted. Editing is where it's at. I need to start drinking, I think. Maybe shoe polish (hic).

Yes, the Betty the B... element may well have factored in. We'll see about Dee.

I see Jumper is getting tepid (if even that good) reviews.

Well, the book is good-- it's frequently found in the "Young Adult" section of the library, but it's well worth your time no matter your age.

Interesting how many "young adult" books are becoming movies these days (even if "The Golden Compass" didn't measure up). I've often wondered why a movie has never been made of Robert Westall's wonderful books about kids during the Blitz, like "The Machine-Gunners," in which a group of English schoolboys discover a crashed German plane and its unconscious pilot. And "Blitzcat" would be terrific for Pixar.

The Spiderwick Chronicles and Definitely, Maybe are getting pretty good reviews. The latter surprised me, but apparently the preknowledge that the parents are facing divorce gives it a good edge. Besides, it has Abigail Breslin.

This was mentioned on the Howard Stern show today.

Howard didn't care. He just talked about how hot Rachel Bilson is.

Thanks, Rod. His career did seem to fade in the 80's. I slightly disagree with this, "Scheider was a self-effacing actor, not given to exercises in cunning ham and award grabs that made notable careers for costars like Hackman and Dustin Hoffman," since Joe Gideon was a bit of a ham (and Scheider got it right). I thought he got his lead roles in Jaws and 2010 just right.

You'll be shocked to learn that Filth & Wisdom, Madonna's directorial debut has received just about the worst reviews possible, even worse than those for hubbie's bomb Revolver.

I think I loved Roy Scheider most in All That Jazz. A very underrated actor. He remains the best reason to endure Wages of Fear, let alone Still of the Night, in which his work opposite Mrs. Gummer's hair is heroic.
