shannon, so far only one studio is doing this. The fucking Weinstein brothers.
I've had to buy SICKO and The Grindhouse flicks at Walmart because of the deal the Weinstein's struck giving Blockbuster an exclusive on their films. I think it was bad business decision and will backfire. By the way, Walmart retails dvds for the same price I pay for them wholesale.
Besides those three films, the store of which I speak hasn't been able to receive Factory Girl, Superbad, The Nanny Diaries, or 1408, among others which I can't recall, from the studio either. It may be that these are all Weinstein films, I dunno. It's shitty, regardless. I mean, if they're gonna force me to rent something at Blockbuster, they deserve to be stole from. IMO. |

Was this based on a cartoon or graphic novel by any chance? Who writes this stuff?
At least it zoomed by, but I can't remember laughing more at inappropriate moments in quite some time. (did I just make that same comment last week?)
Silly nonsense (as opposed to the reasonable kind), though the interplay between Costner and Hurt was mostly fun.
Won't be seeing this in any Top 10 lists.
It does make my 2007 Top 30 list, by default.
I loved it, though I can't argue with the "preposterous" description. |

Thanks, Billy. Have you seen it yet? If so, I've missed your review. |

Well, I was right about Mr. Brooks, because it made Billy's Top 11 (re: Jan. 1 post).
I guess I made the not uncommon mistake of thinking my reaction was the reaction. Doing a quick search I see billy, marj, mo, bart, and probably others enjoyed Mr Brooks. I'll look through and try to decipher why. But Mr. B does maintain a sharp pace and is certainly watchable in a turn dvd player on, turn brain off kind of way.
Really it just reminds me that I should stop wasting my time watching modern crime dramas. Highly rated recent films such as The Departed, Eastern Promises, Mr. Brooks to name a few just seem to try so hard to amp up the tension and violence (and the coincidences) that they become cartoonish and risible in my opinion. Just doesn't interest me. |

To lump Eastern Promises in with those choices is LAZY, if you ask me. |

Yes, I saw Sweeney (I assume that's what you're talking about) and reviewed it briefly. If you look back you'll find the review. Short version: Depp is amazing, great, fantastic. Rickman good. Bonham Carter occasionally good, mostly unintelligible. Overall, it's a worthy picture, better far than Dreamgirls, nowhere near as good as Chicago. Sort of on a par with Hairspray but mostly because of Depp's wonderful work. |

Seen the original, seen the Broadway musical, seen the musical movie. Loved them all. It's opinion. |

All I'm trying to say is, with all the bounty of film released in 2007, to praise a retread, IMO (TIRED), commodity like Hairspray (the movie musical) is an experiment in wasting time. |

With all the bounty (and I agree it's been the best year since 1991), Hairspray is still on my top-ten list. Repeat, I loved it. |

Billy - It's nice having you in my corner. Both Mr. Brooks and Hairspray were among my favourites of 2007. Mr B was an example of solid storytelling, great direction and Costner at his middle-aged creepy best. Hairspray was just tons of fun, although not as rich as Chicago. |

What is this? Hyperbole for effect? Please give an example of something about Hairspray that quantifiably "Sucked".
And let's avoid all thematic links with Michelle Pfeiffer's character. That means YOU, Gromit and Jeremy. |

Both Mr. Brooks and Hairspray are on my top ten (or top eleven if you include Killer of Sheep which has an asterisk), even though MB is almost a "guilty pleasure" because of its 300 different plots. |

My children have seen the new Hairspray and loved it, but they never saw the original. I have seen the original, and loved it, but I haven't seen the new one. What can I say. Not a lot, except that I imagine that for all its merits, it would be all but impossible for the original to match John Waters deliciously cheesey, but slyly satirical and subversive tone. |

The musical is not subversive. It's basically good clean fun with a civil rights theme. I suspect the reason why some fans of the original denigrate the musical is that it doesn't get as grungy and cheesy as Waters's movie. |
