Luv it!

Roger Ebert gave Atonement a review that could only be described as a rave, but sometimes dear old Uncle Roger's anglophilia can be hard to take -he also gave The Golden Compass what was perhaps its best review to-date.

Quote:

...

The movie's opening act is like a breathless celebration of pure heedless joy, a demonstration of the theory that the pinnacle of human happiness was reached by life in an English country house between the wars...

Oh, but the earlier scenes have floated effortlessly. Cecilia, as played by Knightley with stunning style, speaks rapidly in that upper-class accent that sounds like performance art. When I hear it, I despair that we Americans will ever approach such style with our words, which march out like baked potatoes...

Steady there old bean.

As i think most of you know, I know and very much admire and like Roger Ebert, but--yes--he is an avowed and unregenerate Anglophile, the kind that makes me intermittently want to puke.

Don't fret. She's the odds-on favorite for the Oscar.

over Julie Christie?

On the contrary! The trailer shows us that we can all face up to the limited time we have on earth by riding motorcycles on the Great Wall of China and skydiving and eating at really good restaurants and getting to know our estranged children. That's a lesson that can't be told too often. I'm ready to be inspired and to cry, maybe a lot, at the end of the film, when one of the lead characters dies. I don't know which one because it wasn't in the trailer, but I'll cry either way.

LOL!!!!

Oh, yeah, by quite a margin. You have to read the "inside" websites.

I confess to being an anglophile, but I'm also part Irish, which keeps it in check.

It's okay, carrobin-- we still like you, despite your faults.

I'm a quarter Brit, a quarter Scot, and half German, so I'm pretty much superior to everyone. My kids are half Finnish, though, which I find problematic.

Actually, my ancestry is basically Scotch-Irish with a preponderance toward Scot. I've got the book about how the Scotch-Irish built America but haven't read it yet. (I hope it didn't get lost in the move.)

And just to keep on topic, what happened to the Scots film industry? For a while there it seemed to be the up-and-comer. "Restless Natives" was one of my favorites.

I'm half German, one fourth Scotch, one fourth Irish......but feel mostly Thai.

Now that I've seen No Country for Old Men I'll have to go back and read what everyone wrote. It was a directing gem. The acting was all just right.....but it's the Coens that impressed me most......their use of Quiet. When most movies of that type orchestrate your emotional reaction with loud persistent music........No Country really engages your ability to look and listen. And when you think you're watching an ordinary cat and mouse game between a good guy and a bad guy.......Tommy Lee Jone's character looks over the scene and declares "This is no country for old men." Great film!

I heard someone quote Josh Brolin on NPR about his being offered the script. He looked at it and said, "Where are all the lines? I'm a major character and I have this many lines??" He was mocking the typical egotistical actor stereotype, but he has a point. The dialogue is sparing because we're shown things instead of told them.

Josh Brolin's star is definitely rising.......By any chance is he replacing Kurt Russell?

Boy, he'd hate 3-Iron, then...

David Edelstein on NPR's Day to Day just semi-trashed Juno - didn't liked the script / writing. He had very kind words for Ellen Page, though.

3-Iron is awesome, and I'm trying to send it as a thank you gift to someone in Australia, but it's apparently not out in region 4 (and they don't have a multiregion DVD player).
