Thanks for the link to the NYT article. I must have missed that one. Cool pic of the band.

Back in 2001, I had the chance to see Frank Black here in Salt Lake at the now defunct Zephyr Club. Got to shake his hand after the show and my friend Molly got her eye poked by Frank's finger... he didn't realize it at the time and then turned around when someone mentioned what he had done and he apologized.

Our other friend, Abbie was there as well..... kick ass show and when they played "Where Is My Mind", Abbie and I went nuts... incredible performance.

So I'd kill for them to pass through Salt Lake again... the dates looks like they may miss it... maybe someone needs to remind them of the song "Palace of the Brine"

Quote:
In a place they say is dead
in the lake that's like an ocean
i count about a billion head
all the time
there's a motion
palace of the brine
i saw the cloning
of the famous family
i heard the droning
in the shrine
of the sea-monkey
palace of the brine
beneath reflections in the fountain
the starry sky and utah mountains
they are swimming happily
can't you see
a life that's so sublime
palace of the brine.

Wade, we want a full review of the show here. Of course, it's months away... but I want to hear all about it on Dec. 14th

Crossing my fingers for a Salt Lake date... or enough money to road trip to a city close by where they will be.

This new Hives record is pretty good. I don't know what they first album was like but this record goes full blast for thirty minutes and then it makes you wanna listen to it again. What's good with these weirdos?

An excerpt from this month's NME review of the new Hives, which I think gets it about right:

Quote:
Listening to 'Tyrannosaurus Hives' is like playing a game of Your New Favourite Song. Is it 'Abra Cadaver''s psychedelic stomp? Is it 'B Is For Brutus' with its fuzzy riff that sounds like a swarm of bees eating Square Crisps? Is it that first single? 'Walk Idiot Walk' is clearly touched by the god of pop. And, at three minutes and 31, is the longest track on the album by over ten per cent. 'See Through Head' mixes the Pixies with Buggles, but Pelle has a more powerful yelp than Black Francis ever had - proof that the meatball is mightier than the cheeseburger - while 'Dead Quote Olympics' revisits the provincial punk of Sham 69.

English is not The Hives' first language, yet their lyrics sound fascinating. You can't really work out exactly what's being sung. But it sounds like something of life-or-death importance to Pelle. When he sings "the dead quote Olympics" it sounds like "the deaf dumb Olympics". "Two-timing touch and broken bones" might as well be "too dumb, and Dutch, and broken bones".

It doesn't matter. This isn't poetry. Pelle howls great words like "poison!" and "violation!" and they fit with the rhythm.

Most people who bought 'Your New Favourite Band' listened to it relentlessly for a month. And then didn't listen to it again. The same could be true for 'Tyrannosaurus Hives'. Everyone from Garstang to Gothenburg will listen to it for a month. Exclusively. And forget about it for ten years. But, god, what a month August 2004 is going to be. And August 2014.

Forget for a second that Chris Carrabba is a 35 year old man and focus on the song and "Hands Down" becomes the most romantic teenage love song ever. "My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me.
So won't you kill me, so I die happy." Yeah! If I were a 17 year old girl, I'd be totally creaming myself. And the song sounds so fucking great. "...the scent of your hair that you twirled in your fingers and
the time on the clock [long pause] .......... [snare] when we realized it's so late and the walk that we shared together..." Oh, hell yeah!

The rest of the album doesn't live up to the promise of the one song, but it's pretty good. I'm sure the world is happy that Mr. Dashboard Confession decided he no longer wanted to be the John Mayer of the tight t-shirt, spikey belt, and Vans™ set and decided to write some pop songs and rock our asses off. I know I am. And Gil Norton's production is good enough to make you forget that he's single-handedly responsible for castrating one of the most promising punk acts of the past decade..

This Viktor Vaughn "Fall Back" song is notable for being the only song ever to mention Vladmir Putin and titty fat in the same verse.
