Jeremy;

Sophisticated compared to what? is my point. The soporific that is The Girl With the Pearl Earring? The shallow tackiness of A Beautiful Mind? The clumsy narrative-free Ray? Or the blithering steroid-pumped dolour of Gladiator? In these terms modern films tend to be far less sophisticated. One thing that has definitely died, for instance, is the presumption that there's at least a wealth of awareness and appreciation for classical culture in the audience, as well as intellectual curiosity.

Although part of me was dying to see what the film would have looked like if Pasolini had directed it; I kept mentally cross-referencing his portrayal of Giotto in Il Decameron.

As an aside, I think many have pointed out that the women painted on the roof Sistine Chapel are the some of the least feminine this side of a female body builders' convention.

You can say that again. Lot's daughters are awful. Should have let Raphael do that bit. Speaking of whom, the guy who plays him in the film is lousy.

Holy shit, I just started watching Kokoda, which was supposed to be the Aussie Saving Private Ryan. I barely lasted twenty minutes; no character-building, pidgin English dialogue, and a bunch of cinematic stunts pulled more from Wes Craven horror films rather than jungle warfare. Urgh.

Shame, it's a story worth telling, which is probably why they made such a mess of it.

Instead of 'he', just put in the guy's name. Is that so difficult?

It's hard to watch The U.S vs. John Lennon and not wish we had someone like him speaking for us today. Not that his message was anything but simple....."Give peace a chance" THE WAR IS OVER.....if you want it to be.

The special features had some comparisons between that time (Nixon/Vietnam) and now (Bush/Iraq). I like what McGovern had to say. Somebody tell me why young Americans (and old) aren't rising up in disgust over this president and his war......Is it because they are placated by their i-pods and their high def tvs?

**************************************************************

I'm recommending Thumbsucker. I was really taken by the lead actor, Lou Pucci......but a great supporting cast.....Tilda Swinton, Vince Vaughn, Keanu Reeves....and a story with alot of depth/layers despite it's quirkiness.

The Nit-Pick Committee would like to point out that one cannot be both menopausal and pregnant simultaneously. At least one fervently hopes not. That is all.

Why did I first misread that as "Betty Friedan"?

If you want my opinion; Your last sentence is a symptom not a cause. The reason is that a vast majority are clueless about world or even national affairs and don't give a shit.

This should be known as "The Clueless Generation".

Reimpose the draft, and they'll be clueful again. Overnight.

Amen, brother. I mentioned this to my 17-year-old the other day, and she said, "What's a draft?"

Yes, it was the draft that cut Vietnam short so quickly.
