You can follow the plot, or rather the lack of one, a lot better. It still has the odd tango music, so apparently that's part of the film. Sad about the dog, though.
PS: I checked on Wikipedia. Bunuel played the music on a record while showing the film in 1929 and added the music to the print of the film in 1960.
Interesting. I can't remember what the music was when I studied it in film class years ago. You'll have to play the German print for me. |

I assume L'Age d'Or must be as well. I'd like to see that, but I'd have to riot afterward.
Just checked. It is, but apparently the Kino transfer isn't very good. Do you know of a good transfer of either film? |

2006 was a great year for Bunuel on dvd.
Besides L'Age D'or:
The Great Madcap (1949), Bunuel's comeback film, is a fine screwball comedy, like a Spanish language Lubitsch film.
Ascent to Heaven (1952) (aka Mexican Bus Ride) is Bunuel in top form
El (1953)
Nazarín, (1959) - at the top of my to-watch pile
La Joven (1960) -
Viridiana (1961)
Diary of a Chambermaid (1964)
Belle de Jour (1967)
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972)
The Phantom of Liberty (1974)
That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)
I'm not sure how easily these can be found in a rental store. But I've enjoyed all of the Bunuel I've seen. A nice combination of observation, intelligence, and sly humor. Bunuel characters are never simply good or evil, but are always more complex, with elements of both. I'm not as taken with the 70's return to surrealism. And for some reason, I keep forgetting to watch Phantom of Liberty.
I'm still waiting for Tristana (1970); Simon of the Desert (1965); The Exterminating Angel (1962); The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (1955); Los Olvidados (1950) - which I saw in a theater last year, but would like to get on dvd; and Land Without Bread (1933). |

There's a Region 2 BFI L'Age d'Or, but I can't speak to quality (i.e., it's on my to-get-one-of-these-days list).
...but DVD Beaver does have a comparison:

From elsewhere:

Let us know how he likes it. How did you, BTW?
I thought it was hilarious - and there are a lot of (Japanese) pop culture references, to boot. The singing bit with Mt. Fuji was a hoot.
I started writing a review and was going to watch it again, but didn't get a chance. But I did find a copy of the Hizakurige (the early 19th century book that the story is based on) which is funny, too, but only vaguely related.
My sister and b-in-law now have a widescreen tv, so I saw a little bit of it on that. Much more impressive than my sorry 1992 tv. |

Hey Lady W, where've you been?
In fact, where has everybody been?
I noticed ehle blew a fuse, and chilly politely blew us off after becoming a star from hosting the Blanches. But others need to bring in notes from their Moms explaining their absence. |

I was sent off to Washington State on a sudden business trip to a vendor. Since the trip was about 350 miles from Sister Wakasa, I spent the weekend before at their place, where we ate too much, watched Red Doors, and checked out some Arts and Crafts house stuff.
Of course, it'd be more interesting if I just stormed off and said I was never coming back; but if I was never coming back I'd just do it (and e, you know I luv ya). |

Please let it be known that I haven't stopped posting because of any lit fuses. I'm very busy these days and will probably be posting infrequently because of it. That and I'm usually a little movied-out after the Award Season.
Anywho, my main reason for posting today was for Melly Mel. I GOT MY VIVA PEDRO yesterday!!! The whole 9-discs in beautiful packaging from wherehouse.com for $33.50 TOTAL, S&H and NYC taxes. Thanks a million for your incredible head's up post. |

We waited on that, and we lost out. I keep telling myself that it's not the end of the world.

I think we're all suffering from some post-Oscar and post-Blanche ennui. It's natural, so don't get too carried away with the thought that the site has undergone a sea change. I'm sure it'll pick up again once we've all recharged our batteries and got a few films under our belts. |

I am personally convinced that Lady W is the secret identity of Wonder Woman, and that when she's not here, she's busting supervillians. |

Amazingly, I enjoyed both of the last two films I watched on Australian TV. Rod probably caught them two, but was too embarrassed to admit it. First up was Donnie Darko; do you remember that? It had enough going for it - it was edgy, well acted and not afraid to have a kick around with a number of ideas. However, it was perhaps a little too cute for its own good. I haven't done any research, but it felt like a first screenplay, it had the writers finger prints all over it. The part of the English teacher, and it's always an English teacher, played by Drew Barrymore, could not have been more obvious if she'd stood up and screamed, "I am the author." Roland Barthes would have...who was the French philosopher and literary critic who liked to be pissed on in gay bars? Also all the villains of the piece: the sneering older teacher; Patrick Swayze's self-help guru who turns out to be paedophile; the neanderthal jocks, were a little too eager to let Donnie Darko's schizophrenic arsonsit to seem the saintly side of sane. |

Donnie Darko was on last night? Sorry, I was watching the DVD copy I bought of The Ten Commandments last night, laughing merrily all the way.
Good comments on DD's weaknesses, J-man. |
