I thought this episode had a Chaplinesque flavor to it. This is the one time that we see Borat truly down and out, despondent, etc. The frat boys, tho' creeps (and I'm sure they would be even if they were sober), are doing their best to cheer him up.
I think it's an essential segment of the film. |

Saw Babel yesterday. It's a harrowing film. All three stories have characters up against awful tricks of fate.
Unlike Crash, where the frequent helpings of comfort were sickeningly sweet, Babel didn't offer anything to sooth for most of the film. For some reason 21 Grams is a film I don't remember well........just Sean Penn and Naomi Watts over-emoting. Traffic was interesting and informative.
I think Babel was the best of the bunch.........if it has to be a bunch. Each story was powerful.........each locale was vivid and distinct: Mexico, Morrocco, Japan. Probably there was some overindulgence by the film maker........causing the film to be longer than it needed to be.
The most poignant story for me was of the Japanese school girl, privileged materially.......but burdened by being deaf and dumb. (That should have been enough......but add on that her mother committed suicide.) The acting here was superb!
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett did not need to be in this film. Unknowns could have played their characters more effectively. They were cast, I'm sure, just for their box office appeal. I think Brad Pitt should just retire from films. I don't need to see him again.
Babel was a hard film to watch. I would have been satisfied with just one of the stories............3 was an ordeal. |

The Butterfly Effect fad (films where minute things in someone's life affect all these other strangers far away and everything is connected in multiple narratives) may have played itself out. Let's hope. The description of Babel pretty nearly convinced me that viewing it would be an ordeal.
Pitt and Blanchett = getting producers to sign on?
Pitt is overrated, but "I don't need to see him again," is harsh. Still, I can understand how a certain level of exposure can sour a person on a celebrity/actor.
He's made good choices and bad choices, like any other actor. I liked him in The Mexican. |

Pitt's made far more good choices than bad. He's fine in Babel, but Befade's right that he could've easily been replaced.
Best choices by an actor has to be Matt Damon: The Bourne Supremacy, Syriana, The Departed, and the upcoming The Good Shepherd. |

Much agreed. Matt has really come into his own since Good Will hunting, which I really liked him in. He keeps getting better and better. |

Trish and Bart............I don't hate Brad Pitt and he wasn't awful in Babel. It's just that when you've seen an actor over and over again and he's omnipresent in the tabloids..........you say ENOUGH!!! He's a distraction from the story.
But, I think I have a different philosophy than most. I think there should be an expiration date on actors. They lose their freshness. I know it's their career..........but they really don't need more money.......they could retire early. New faces are much more intriguing. |

| I don't necessarily disagree - I just wasn't sure you were referring to his performance in the film or some other reason (Tabloids etc) - I get you. I perferred Brad's earlier stuff (ie. Kalifornia) |

| Catching up with the posts since that, I find all these examples of "really funny" things in Borat or Ali G. Makes me cringe. No better example that comedic tastes are highly individual. |

Well if you want a bit of a giggle see Flushed Away.
Yes, I know, it's animae. But it a collaboration of Aardman/Dreamworks and it's pretty funny.
The slugs singing "don't worry, be happy" is worth the price of admission!
The children will enjoy it. But's also got a lot of amusing adult touches that will probably go over their heads. |

This is a good reasons to keep using SPOILERS. I try NOT to read much of anything at all about the movies I want to see.
I honestly think members' comments about BORAT haven't given away too much of the movie. I myself would recommend going ahead and seeing it. You can always walk out if I didn't like it. Usually you CAN get your money back if you say you got sick or give some other good excuse. |
