By the same guys that made Walk On Water. Did you see Walk On Water, Wade? It's very good, I think you'd really like it. The crew that made these movies sure give gays and gay reality a good amount of screen time.

I think he told me he had seen Yossi and Jagger (I've heard of it but haven't gotten to see it).

There was a q&a afterwards; it was pretty good. I liked the movie, but had a few minor quibbles about the story. (Plus the poster table told me they'd still be around after the film ended, and they weren't - the bastards. >%^{)

Are they doing a release in the US, Wade? Just wondering why it made the cover at this specific point in time.

Sept 7th US release, I seem to remember Mr. Fox saying something about a September release.

They have a MySpace page here:

marantzo -- I like Y&J more than Walk on Water -- and The Bubble even moreso.

Was the Advocate article good, Wade? I'll look for it tonight at Barnes and Noble.

El Cantante

I don't know where I got the idea that Jennifer Lopez had only a cameo appearance in this movie. I thought I read it or heard it somewhere. Nothing could be further from the truth. Not only does she have a major part in El Cantante, but one could argue persuasively that she is the lead. She is onscreen in most of the scenes and the entire story is told in flashback through her character's eyes. This is easily her best work. It is a nuanced, substantial performance in a sensational musical biopic of the life of Salsa star Hector Lavoe.

This is not to diminish the work of Marc Anthony, who plays the title character with such apparently remarkable ease that he might get the slight (which is actually a compliment) that he "isn't really acting" but only playing himself. It's just that Lopez here is so much of a revelation. She is at once brash and vulnerable, wounding and tender.

The movie's other strength lies in its loving recreation of the 1970's Nuyorican Salsa scene. Perhaps, though, I'm biased toward this project to begin with. While growing up in York, PA in the 1970's, my mother married her third husband, a gentleman from Puerto Rico. (He was also her third divorce a few years later, but that's another story.) When Esteban moved into our house, so did Salsa music. There was more than one Hector Lavoe LP in that cabinet under the phonograph in the living room. The movie even includes one of those album cover photos, with Lavoe dresed as Charlie Chaplin. When the movie's vibrant, dazzling musical numbers were playing, I was taken back to 725 Hardwick Place and felt 12 again.

I've seen the trailer for that. It looked pretty intriguing.

The album is "La Comedia" ('78). I have it here somewhere. It features the tune "El Cantante", which runs about ten minutes.
I love Hector, but I'm not crazy about Marc Anthony's singing. Still, he gets high marks from a damn good Latin music website: http://www.descarga.com/cgi-bin/db/process?dy6AqV5d;;1. You'll get an error message, but just enter "Lavoe" in the quick search menu.

Finally caught up with Bug. It's a wild ride and certainly not for all tastes. It follows the saga of two damaged people who form a sexual liaison and play into their own worst character defects. The ending is baroque and over-the-top in the extreme, but extraordinarily well acted. Ashley Judd is amazing and Michael Shannon is spectacular. I can't say I think it's a particularly "good" film, but it's more memorable than many. William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) directed it with flair and sensitivity. Harry Connick Jr. plays one of his handsome creeps, a la Copycat.

I thought Judd and Shannon's acting was excellent and brave BUT I don't think I could watch that again -- its was very upsetting, disturbing. Although it was way way overthetop the suffering seemed very genuine. I've worked with clients with extreme paranoia

I totally understand your point of view. The movie is almost too close to the bone despite being over the top. Very unusual blend of realism and surrealism, grounded by Judd and Shannon and their weird, weird chemistry.

Billy, I'm sure you will be thrilled to know that parts of Across the Universe were filmed in Winnipeg. I saw the preview a number of times. The first time I saw it I thought it looked like it might be pretty good, but with every subsequent viewing my opinion started to sink until the last time I saw the preview I was convinced that it was crap.

I was the same way. First time seeing a preview, I was all pumped to see it. The last preview I saw, it looks like something I can wait for DVD. I may still give it a go on the big screen, but it's chances are getting slimmer.

This movie has taken forever to get off the ground. I had thought it had a release date of summer 2006 at one point.

Reviewing The Nanny Diaries, The New York Post's young critic Kyle Smith strikes again with his mix of smart-assed and witty.

He dubs the movie "Mary Floppins."

His overall adjective to describe the flick is
"supercalifragilisticexpialatrocious."

That's enough for me. Thanks for the warning, Trish.

Marj--Last week I quoted Kyle Smith's description of former Wonder Years star Fred Savage, who has just directed the apparently horrible Daddy Day Camp, as a man with "a bright past in show business."
